Open House Ministries has been an emergency food pantry for many years, thanks to local churches and community members who keep our shelves stocked.
Our latest food security initiative is to teach our children how to grow their own food. Our community garden is part of our WISE-UP after school program. The children plant, weed, water and tend six raised garden beds. The jalapeno chili peppers and cilantro have been our best growing plants, but we have also harvested green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, and green peppers. We know we cannot feed Homestead with 6 raised garden beds, but we hope we can encourage some of our families to grow their own fresh vegetables to supplement their food supply.
